What type of leagues does CUA offer?
CUA offers both individual and team based leagues. All leagues hosted by CUA are currently coed although we offered a Mens division in Spring 2007 and plan further expansion in 2008. Individual based leagues use a draft based system in which volunteer captains draft individuals available for the season. Individuals are allowed to Request to Play With (RTPW) one additional individual. Please see the What about playing with my best friend Snorkels in an individual league? section for more information. Team leagues are designed for individuals that have an existing group that they want to bring to a league. CUA will help captains find additional players if you're close on numbers but not quite there. What levels of play does CUA offer?
CUA primarily offers two levels of play, competitive and semi-competitive. In individual based leagues these divisions are designated as A for competitive and B for semi-competitive. If you are new to the sport the individual based leagues are probably the best place to start, our Winter league offers one division so experienced and beginning players are on the same team - the goal is to provide a fun and informative league! What leagues are currently being offered?
All leagues are coed and played as a 4 man, 3 woman format unless specified otherwise. Although CUA designates registration close dates be warned that registration for any league will close once capacity for that league is reached. Registration can close without any warning.
| League Name | Type | Description | Location Played | Registration Start Date | Registration Close Date | Cost | |
| Winter 2008 | Individual | Outdoor winter league for all skill levels | Denver University | November 21st | January 1st | $75 until 12-22 $80 after that |
What do I need in order to register?
You must have a profile created to play any CUA leagues. You need your OWN email address in order to setup a profile (you can't use the same email address for multiple individuals). If you do not currently have an email account you can sign-up for free accounts at Google, Yahoo, or Hotmail.Once you have a profile setup you can register for our leagues. If the league is individual based you will need a credit card (the same credit card can be used for multiple individuals), if it's team based you will be provided a Team Coupon Code by your captain. Captains wishing to bring a team to any of our team based leagues need to email CUA Admin to ensure there is a spot (see How do I captain a team based league team?)
How does registration work for individual based leagues?
In order to register for an individual based league you must have the following:
- A CUA profile - it's best if you create the profile prior to starting registration. You are required to have your own email address to create a profile (no sharing the same email address by multiple individuals). Please use Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail to sign up for a free email address if you don't already have one.
- A valid credit card
- If you are planning on playing with another individual you will need the email address they are going to use to sign up with CUA for the season (you should provide the same to them).
Once you have the items above you can sign up for individual based leagues. First, login to your Player Home. Once logged in simply go to the Home page for the season you want to play and click on the Register link. You will be walked through the process of accepting our online waiver and entering key information for the season (your skill level, specific information about you, etc) and providing payment. CUA also offers links on your player home page to register for a season but as of the writing of this FAQ that hasn't been updated yet.
How does registration work for team based leagues?
In order to register for a team based league you need to have a group of individuals together that will support playing a 4/3 format for the entire season. If you wish to bring a team to a team based league you need to email CUA Admin to confirm you want a spot and that we have one available. You will be able to pay by either check or credit; however, if you elect to pay by credit you are required to pay a $35 processing fee. CUA will accept a deposit for half of the season fee with the remaining due the day of the 1st games of the league.Once CUA has received payment for the season (either the full payment or deposit) a team coupon code will be assigned to your team. The captain will then distribute that code to his or her team and the individual team members will go through the same registration process as individual based league players (see How does registration work for individual based leagues?)
How do I captain an individual based league team?
CUA utilizes volunteer captains for its individual based leagues. As an incentive to captain CUA offers a refund on season fees provided the captain performs all of their necessary duties. Basic requirements CUA has established for captaining is that the individual must have at least three years experience with organized Ultimate (leagues, club/open teams, etc) and have a willingness to provide instruction and leadership to team players. In addition you must communicate with your team on a weekly basis to inform them of game times, ensure pickup players on opposing teams have been approved, ensure game scores are submitted within 5 days of the game and manage Injury Replacement for the season if necessary. CUA provides a web interface to help with communication and processing related items (Injury replacement, submitting game scores, etc). Lastly, you or a team representative must be present at the draft. If you are interested in captaining for an individual based league please mark that option as you sign up. CUA takes the list of volunteer captains collected during registration and decides who will be allowed to fill the spots. If you sign up to be a captain you or a team representative MUST be at draft so please save the date to ensure someone to represent your team is available.
How do I captain a team based league team?
CUA expects captains to bring their own teams for these leagues. You collect a group of individuals that will support playing a 4/3 format for the entire season and then you inform CUA that you want a team spot. Captain duties include communicate with your team on a weekly basis to inform them of game times, ensure game scores are submitted within 5 days of the game and work with the league to resolve any issues that may be encountered during the season. Please see How does registration work for team based leagues for additional information.Who should attend drafts?
Only one representative per team (typically the captain), volunteers and CUA Admin are allowed to attend draft. Season players can view draft results online after draft is complete. What about playing with my best friend Snorkels in an individual league?
Each player is allowed one "Request to Play With (RTPW)". Here's how it works. You need to coordinate with your friend to determine what email address they are going to use to sign up with CUA. While you are at it, give them the email address you are going to use. During registration you will have the opportunity to enter ONE email address for your RTPW.
In order for a request to be honored during draft there must be a match between the two players (i.e. Snorkels needs to enter your email address and you need to enter Snorkels'). If the request isn't matched CUA ignores the request. Please ensure that each of you uses the correct email address as we have a system that matches the request and we do not review it manually.Dude, my email address changed after I registered, how do I still play with Snorkels?
No problem. Go to the Player Home and enter the email address and password you signed up with. Once you login you will be able to change items such as your email address, your request to play with and all of the other profile related data. Make sure Snorkels goes into his profile and changes the email address for the RTPW.Who cares, when's the party?
CUA offers season parties with its Spring and Fall Sunday seasons. The Fall Sunday season party will be held Friday, October 12th. The location and theme have not been decided yet.Why should I be a volunteer?
CUA strives to provide the highest quality Ultimate possible. CUA is run by Ultimate players for Ultimate players. We offer several leagues throughout the year and ensure everything is organized and runs properly. In short that requires a LOT of work and we simply can't be successful without help from the Ultimate community. Good, reliable hope is always needed and following are some key areas of need for CUA:Volunteer captains for our individual leagues are a big need for the organization. CUA's Spring and Fall leagues are only successful if we have captains to run teams. There have been many seasons when CUA Admin had to make a lot of phone calls to get captains on the fields. This is not only inconvenient for CUA Admin it typically results in a lower quality league all around. Please consider volunteering to be a captain - if you're selected you will receive a refund for the season if you perform your duties for the season.
Field assistants are also a great need for our Spring and Fall based leagues. Games typically run from 9am until 4 or 5pm. Field assistants help the organization setup fields, blow game horns and tear down fields. If you can assist with three days (can be broken into half days) then CUA will refund your season fees. In order to volunteer for this position you must be very dependable – if you commit to being at the fields at 8:15am on a Sunday you need to be there by 8:15am – no excuses why not.
Individuals to help us pick up, deliver and return beer on a weekly basis is also a great need. This requires being able to pick up 3 to 4 kegs each week, keep them cold, deliver them to the fields on Sunday and then returning them early the next week. If you can assist with this during the season CUA will refund your season dues.
Finally, CUA utilizes its website to provide as much to the community as possible but we have several other areas that we think would benefit the community. If you are an experienced we developer and want to help us get a better product out to the community please let us know. We primarily use Microsoft technology.
If any of these volunteer opportunities are of interest to you please select that option during registration. If you're interested in helping with Web work we'd also appreciate an email to CUA Admin to let us know you can help.
Is there any other way besides web to sign up?
The first choice is most certainly through the web. If you have a major paranoia about using the web to pay for the season then contact admin@coloradoultimate.org. We will accept a check; however, there is a $7.00 fee associated with using this method. Also, if the check bounces there will be a $30 fee - if you default on the check you will be banned from playing with this organization. What is the Refund Policy?
The registration fee for individual leagues is refundable until the 1st week of play. Once the 1st week of the season has completed no refunds will be offered. All refunds are subject to the CUA $7 processing fee and will be mailed no later than the conclusion of the season. A refund requested during the 1st weekend of play will be prorated for 1 game and is also subject to the CUA $7 processing fee. Registrants are not refunded for games missed due to weather.
